About
It's the early 19th century in England. Being an unmarried daughter of a not wealthy landed country gentleman is really hard in this time. And having four unmarried sisters, and no brother to inherit the estate, is even harder. This is the current state of affairs for Jane and Elizabeth Bennet. But when two young and wealthy bachelors move into the neighbourhood, almost everybody gets excited. Jane is singled out by the nice and good-hearted Mr Bingley. His friend notices Elizabeth, and she jokes about the apparently proud and condescending Mr Darcy. But the sisters soon find themselves in the middle of dramatic events, complicated feelings, clashes with empowered relatives and fights for reputation that means everything in this era.
First published in 1813, Pride and Prejudice remains fascinating for modern readers, and can almost always be found near the top of lists of "most loved books." It’s sold over 20 million copies.
