About
Gabriel Utterson, a lawyer, discovers that his client and old friend, the reputable gentleman Dr Jekyll, has a strange connection to the despicably behaved Mr Hyde. Jekyll has made Hyde his sole beneficiary in the case of his death or, strangely, his disappearance. Utterson tries to discuss the matter with Jekyll, who turns pale, but assures his friend that everything is in order.
But one year later, Hyde beats a man to death with a heavy cane. Jekyll now claims to have ended all relations with Hyde. But the handwriting of a note, allegedly written to Jekyll by Hyde, bears a remarkable similarity to Jekyll's own handwriting...
The concept of how personalities can affect a human intrigued the author for a long time, but the idea for the story came to Stevenson in a dream in the form of a couple of scenes which would later appear in the story. First published in 1886, this novella became an immediate bestseller and a classic within the horror genre.
