A nice beginning of the series

At first the book might seem to be strange – the action takes place on the isolated island surrounded by the sea inhabited by the mysterious sirens so it would suggest that it is classical fantasy novel but apart from the titled voices there are no other fantastic creatures nor magic. What’s more I was not at first convinced by the idea of the portrayed community. It seemed that this mixture of contemporary elements, Northern sagas and dystopian ideas of a divided society serving as a background for a teenage romance would not work out. However, it did. It is a really well-written young adult fiction (rather for girls). Especially the main heroine is convincing – she is rather emotional and timid at the beginning but appears to be developing and changing to be more mature and resourceful. The main hero is rather irritating (for me a sort of Mr Hot and Perfect kind of guy) but I guess he can be likeable.
