Not for the squeamish!

Truth be told, I have never been a great fan of Masterton's prose. However, "Beholder" made quite an impact on me. This short story revolves around Fiona, a young girl who is locked away by her mother. Though solitary, Fiona's life is a happy one - the mother genuinely loves her and is always ready with a fresh lemonade or a fairytale, if Fiona needs either. However, one day the girl's life takes a dark turn... "Beholder" brings horror to reader on multiple levels. One one hand, the story contains vivid descriptions of gory events, while on the other it resonates with deeper fears, especially those connected with parenthood. "Beholder" is at the same time thought provoking and terrifying. I deeply recommend it - but not to the squeamish and the faint of heart!
